Storm Protection: Common Questions

Straight answers about how Roll Shutters perform in Ontario weather.

Do Roll Shutters actually protect windows during a storm?

Yes. A closed Roll Shutter puts a continuous aluminum barrier in front of the glass, so wind-driven debris strikes the shutter rather than the window. That matters because most storm damage inside a home starts with a single broken pane: once a window fails, wind and rain enter and pressure builds against the roof and interior walls. Keeping the glass intact keeps the building envelope sealed.

Are storm shutters worth it in southern Ontario? We don't get hurricanes.

Ontario doesn't get hurricanes, but it does get severe thunderstorms, downbursts, hail and sustained high winds — and Environment Canada issues wind warnings for the Lake Erie and Lake Ontario shorelines every year. Exposure varies a lot by location: an open lakefront lot in Fort Erie or a property on the Niagara Escarpment brow takes far more wind than a sheltered inland street.

How quickly can the shutters be closed?

Motorized shutters close in well under a minute, and you can operate them from a wall switch, a handheld remote or your phone. That means you can secure the house from inside during a storm, or remotely if you're away when weather moves in. Manual crank options are also available.

Can Roll Shutters be installed on an existing home, or only new builds?

Both. The large majority of our installations are retrofits onto existing homes. The shutter housing mounts above the window opening and can be surface-mounted or recessed into the soffit or wall so it sits nearly out of sight when open. We measure each opening individually, so unusual or arched window shapes are usually workable.

What do they do for me the rest of the year?

Most owners use them daily rather than seasonally. Closed shutters block break-in attempts at ground-floor windows and doors, cut heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter through the insulated slat profile, reduce outside noise, and black out a room almost completely for sleeping or shift work.

What warranty comes with the shutters?

Every Vastek product carries a 10-year warranty, and professional installation by our own crew is included rather than subcontracted. If something needs attention, the people who installed it are the people who come back.
