Pergolas: Common Questions

Sizes, shade control, and how a Pergola works with Screens and Blinds.

What sizes do you build?

Common footprints are 10 by 10, 10 by 12, 12 by 12, 12 by 14 and 10 by 20 feet, and those cover most residential patios. Sizes outside that range are built to the space rather than forced into a standard footprint, so an unusual patio shape or a narrow side yard is not a barrier.

Can the amount of shade be adjusted?

With a motorized Pergola, yes — that is the main reason to choose one over a fixed structure. You can open the roof for full sun, angle it for filtered light through the middle of the day, or close it when the sun is directly overhead. A fixed open-frame Pergola gives a constant level of dappled shade that changes only as the sun moves.

Can a Pergola be combined with Retractable Screens or Sun Blinds?

This is the most common way we build them. Retractable Screens fitted to the sides turn the Pergola into an insect-free room, and Sun Blinds handle low sun coming in horizontally, which a roof cannot block. Overhead shade solves midday; Retractable Screens and Sun Blinds solve morning, evening and bugs.

Does it have to attach to the house?

No. A Pergola can be attached to the house, which suits extending a kitchen or living room outward, or freestanding over a patio, pool deck or seating area away from the building. Attached structures need a suitable wall or fascia to fix to, which we check when measuring.

Do I need a permit?

It depends on your municipality, the size of the structure and whether it is attached to the house, so it is worth a call to your local building department before ordering. If the property sits in a heritage conservation district — and there are several across our service area, including in Brantford, Hamilton, Oakville and Niagara-on-the-Lake — exterior alterations can require a heritage permit as well.

Can one be added over a patio or deck we already have?

Usually yes. What matters is the surface and what the posts can bear on, so an existing concrete patio, paver surface or structurally sound deck is normally workable. We measure the space and check the footing situation before quoting rather than assuming.

What warranty comes with them?

Every Vastek product carries a 10-year warranty, and installation is carried out by our own crew rather than subcontracted.
