Four things at once. Closed over a window or door it is a physical barrier against forced entry. The insulated slat profile slows heat moving in during summer and out during winter. It blocks essentially all daylight, so a bedroom can be darkened completely. And it dampens outside noise. Most owners buy for one of those reasons and end up using the shutters for all four.

Fully closed, close to all of it — the slats meet to form a continuous surface, which is why shutters are often specified for bedrooms and for anyone working night shifts. Lowered part way, they let in filtered light and air while still shading the glass, so you are not limited to fully open or fully shut.

The visible part when open is the housing above the window, and that can be surface-mounted or recessed into the wall or soffit so it sits nearly out of sight. Roll Shutters are available in white, beige, brown, silver and black, so the housing and slats can be matched to existing trim rather than contrasting with it.

Motorized shutters run from a wall switch, a handheld remote or your phone. Sun and wind sensors can be added so the shutters respond automatically to conditions. Manual crank operation is also available where a motor is not wanted or practical.

They reduce heat transfer through the window opening. The slat profile is insulated, and when closed it holds a layer of still air between the shutter and the glass, which is the same principle a double-glazed unit relies on. How much that changes a specific bill depends on the window, its orientation and how the house is heated, so we would rather look at your openings than quote a percentage.

Yes — most residential installations are retrofits. The housing mounts above the existing opening, so the window itself does not need replacing. Each opening is measured individually, which means unusual widths and arched or shaped windows are generally workable.
